FEATURED AUTHOR: MARY GIBBS
Mary "Buffy" Gibbs is the author of Secrets of the Maiden, a young adult
adventure following a young girl's quest for revenge as cabin "boy" on the
pirate ship that destroyed her family on their way to America. Mary is also
the founder of Authors' Links Support Network, a great place to find great
books, plus other writing related sites. Gibbs Ink is Mary's scanning &
printing company for small business owners, families, and fellow authors.
. When did I first start writing?
20 years ago as of May 2nd. In elementary school, I had to write a poem and
enter it in a contest for an assignment. I won a certificate for it. I was
hooked! Three years later, I started writing prose.
Why did I start writing?
It's going to sound silly, but I HAD to write. I started having dreams when I
was 11 that absolutely HAD to be written down. My dreams were full of
stories. They'd haunt me during the day if I didn't put them down on paper.
What sort of books do I like to read?
It's easier to ask what kind of books I don't like! My absolute favorite has
always been young adult fiction. That's the genre I write for. Gotta keep up
with the competition! I also like Christian suspense.
Who is my favorite author?
Oh, there are so many! I'll narrow it down to two: L.J. Smith (young adult)
and Frank Peretti (Christian). Their work is so powerful that it makes me cry.
What advice would I give to beginning writers?
WRITE. Plain & simple. Don't say, "Someday I want to be a writer." Do it NOW.
Don't wait. You'll waste precious time and inspiration. Too many people think
you have to have some kind of grand education to be a writer. I'm just a
simple high school graduate with a love of words.
If I could meet any character from a book, who would it be?
Well, it couldn't be anyone from any of my stories. I know how they really
are deep down inside! I'd love to meet Stefan, from L.J. Smith's Vampire
Diaries series. Or maybe Julian, from her Forbidden Game.
