Phantom Shades

J M Heluk © 2001

I rise at night with ravens eyes
Upon this face a strange disguise
With wicked heart made black as pitch
A demons soul for mine I switch
And burst the eve from earthen clay
That comforts me from light of day

Am I now alive or dead?
With lips of white so rimmed in red
A shrinking soul that cries for more
To drink from one whom I adore
My love it burns like funeral pyre
A gift to her; my one desire

Bathed in glowing candles flame
Among the graves my lover came
This beauty torn that she has found
A phantom shade on hallowed ground
A frail thing she softly weeps
That in this cold place her lover sleeps
Her opal skin and eyes so glowing
Fearful still and not yet knowing
Why her love has scented death
Attached to every frozen breath

She held me close and touched my hair
And gazed at me with longing stare
With golden eyes so lost in dream
On skin as cold as snowdrifts gleam
I need to make her mine this love
But fear she still knows nothing of
The existing afterlife she faces
Of lying still in dampened places

A single kiss she falls to earth
She moans the dying sound of birth
And turns her face a marble mask
Her dainty veins, a tricky flask
Followed by the clinking sound
As mass of heart comes winding down
The candle drops from her fingertips
And coats the ground with waxy drips

"Lover with the ivory skin, taste your end and let me in"

So quick to leave me she draws breath
And shadows form the shroud of death
I hiss instruction to her brain
And watch blood leak from severed vein

"Now come back, I love you so. Enter death then quickly go.
Fight the angels in your way. Embrace my curse, forever stay"

Eyes once that glittered like spun gold
With love that I forever hold
Turn to white and flatten fast
And let me know that she has passed
But how the moments move too slow
Tendons strain and rigor show-
The scent of petal flesh decayed
Frightens me that she has strayed
And lost for good her will to fight
Sent tumbling backwards from the light
And which way back she does not know
The evil there will make it so

I lean to her and whisper sweet
"Please my darling, fast retreat
Come back to me with golden eyes
For demons there are filled with lies"
Then comes a sound of heart filled dread
Like beating wings inside my head
With all my power I still fear
The lurking evil that draws near
Come wicked things that glide in air
With teeth like spikes and worms as hair

A writhing mass with common goal
To steal from me my lovers soul
They mourn her pass with no regard
To eat a soul so bruised and scarred
Purple turn her fingertips
I taste the rot upon my lips
And shrink away from flesh so tainted
Her dead skin mask garishly painted
Like a coward slinking back
I flee from final Deaths attack

She was my love a thousand nights
Despite her dark depressing plights
Feeling long dead mortal pangs
Trickle thick from venom fangs
And drip upon the sodden floor…
A feeling I cannot endure
Every love stolen from me
Consumed by things that cannot be

Chattering black creeping things
Poise to eat with leather wings
Suckle scraps of clotted red
That cling so tightly to the dead

"Follow me no more!" I cry
"Leave us be! Her body lie!"

But wicked things they are I see
They will always trail me
For scraps of flesh and blood that's turning
I loved her so, my body yearning
Once again to hold her near
Erase her pain of life with fear
And how she feared my cold embrace
But loved me still! A demons face!

Impious things cling to her now
For I have broken solemn vow
That I had promised with these lips
Eternal life but yet she slips
And darker now the shadow grows
Like the blooming off a rose
And spreads like stain upon the floor
To render my true love no more

The gruesome sight of Deaths attack
Beckons me to claim her back
And claws my hands with pure desire
Eyes like embers tossed from fire
I rip through ghosts that soil her frame
And do this all in Gods lost name

I will not lose to final death
To never feel her perfumed breath
Upon my skin, upon my lips
With all my might I loosen grips
Of tiny claws in stiffened flesh
I rip the nightmare fabric mesh
And tear my skin with sharpened teeth
Exposing sluggish veins beneath
Sending forth an arc of spray
So my eternal love can stay

Unholy mouths in endless bleating
That her heart has not ceased beating
Angered at a soul so fixed
Gnash their teeth with angry clicks
And draw towards me an inky swell
A bundled knot cast up from hell

Hordes of Demons scream at me
Then sweep away in a bloody sea
Of long dead blood as thick as mire
That I set forth for my desire
To cast them back from whence they came
Back to fire, into flame

The pallid skin of her leg
Speckles like a robins egg
With droplets dark against white skin
A race of time that I must win
The crimson puffs the candle out
Then turns and takes a different route
Into her mouths frozen scream
I await again eyes gold to gleam

Demon howls far off grow muttered
Alas my lovers’ eyes have fluttered!
And opened under midnight skies!
With gold again in hollowed eyes!
And from them cast such witching glow
That pulsed and bent, to and fro
Like dancing ghosts of death and life
She struggles back from endless strife…

Orbs of starburst golden light
Gleam at me through endless night
And comes a sudden breathe of lust
That perfumes the air with rot and must
She returns to me however slow

"You came for me. I love you so"

Out of dreary slumber wakes
And another drop of blood she takes
These new eyes that I behold
A brighter shine! A purer gold!
I lay kisses on newborn skin
Flesh now bound in endless sin
Phantom shades to skies ascending
Lovers’ twine in never ending
I take her hand and reach for night
Forever loved in endless flight.
