The Devil is in the Details

A killer is stalking the small California town of Santa Rosa. On his tail is Jake Daniels, an FBI agent who lost his wife and partner to a serial killer the year before and is determined this one won't slip through his fingers.

He has problems, though, he's overly fond of drink and the local law enforcement are of little or no help. The coroner hides evidence from him, he's being pursued by the press, all eager to hear how badly he's doing on the case.

The killer strikes on holidays, but there is a gap one New Year's Eve. Had someone got away from the killer? Who, and why would they keep it secret? The killer preys on women, but one night a man is found murdered with the same MO. Is there one killer or two?

The plot has as many twists and blind alleys as a labyrinth and keeps your attention at every turn. You just have to read on to find out what's going to happen next. There are surprises and shocks galore (it's not for the faint hearted, some of the scenes are fairly graphic) and I was hooked until the last page. Unlike some other thrillers where you can guess the culprit fairly early on, I didn't guess who it was until the final denoument.

An excellent achievement.
