THE PROMISED ONES

Over a thousand years ago, the dying Philosopher King, Labad, wrote down a prophecy in his own rapidly dwindling blood. He prophesied the coming of the two who would save the world from devastation. Now that time has come and the Destroyer is on his way. The two, Adam and Charity, twins barely out of childhood and just entering adolescence, far from being the simple countryfolk they thought they were, discover they are the two chosen to save the world.
The usual fantasy fare is here, dwarves, trolls, dragons, good wizards and evil sorcerers, giants and ogres. There are monsters to slay and truths to seek, magical weapons and powers to harness.
It's a good, engaging story, but the narrative tends to move along a little jerkily, sometimes going from one character's point of view to another without the benefit of a section or chapter break. It was interesting the way the author told the story from both Adam's and Charity's point of view, but it would have been even better if their stories were told in different chapters, that would have made the characters a lot easier to relate to.
An entertaining tale, with villains painted black and white, there are no grey areas here, I could almost imagine them in an old silent movie, twirling their black cape and tying the heroine down on the train track. The story could do with just a little bit more polish to make it really shine.
UPDATE:
Since I last reviewed this book it has undergone some changes, including character's points of view in different chapters and now is a lot better. It's a lot more enjoyable to read and the author has certainly improved the book overall. Well worth a look if you like your fantasy interspersed with a bit of humour.
